Al-Sharaa and Erdogan discussed the joint defense treaty
The interim president of Syria, Ahmad al-Sharaa, and the president of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, met in Ankara to discuss a joint defense treaty. According to sources, the treaty involves the establishment of Turkish airbases in central Syria and the training of a new Syrian army.
Turkey, a NATO member, has long supported the armed opposition in Syria against Bashar Assad. Now Ankara is trying to fill the vacuum created after the overthrow of the Assad regime, which was supported by Iran. By doing so, Turkey aims to expand its influence in the Middle East, which may lead to conflict with the Gulf countries.
The treaty includes the establishment of new airbases by Turkey in Syria, the use of Syrian airspace for military purposes, and a leading role in the training of troops in the new Syrian army. Moreover, Turkey will be able to protect Syrian airspace in the event of any future attacks.
This is the first Time that signs of a strategic defense agreement with the new Syrian authorities have emerged.
