Eastern flank of NATO: Germany promises to protect Lithuania from the threat of the Russian Federation.

The German armed forces are ready to defend the Baltic states
During a visit to Lithuania, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that the German armed forces are ready to defend the Baltic states against any threat. This was made known during the ceremony for the establishment of a tank brigade to support NATO's eastern flank.
Germany plans to complete the formation of this brigade by the end of 2027, deploying up to 5000 servicemen on site. This brigade will become the first permanently stationed tank brigade of the country abroad since World War II.
In the context of the reduction of U.S. security commitments in Europe, Germany promises to play a larger role in the defense of the continent. Chancellor Merz stated that their security in Europe also depends on the security of the region where the Baltic states are located.
The decision to deploy the brigade in Lithuania was a result of the reassessment of NATO's defense posture after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The German authorities are grateful to Lithuania for recognizing the Russian threat, emphasizing that Germany is now aware of the seriousness of the situation and its responsibility.
Overall, cooperation between Germany and Lithuania to strengthen the defense of the region is an important step in ensuring security in Eastern Europe.
