U.S. Vice President Jay D. Vance intends to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the Munich Security Conference to discuss possible peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, reports Euronews. The meeting is scheduled for Friday and will also include U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The main topic of discussion will be President Donald Trump's initiative to begin negotiation processes between the warring countries.
Earlier, on Wednesday, Trump also had separate phone conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. As a result of the conversation with Putin, an agreement was reached on 'immediate commencement of negotiations' aimed at ending the war.
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth previously stated that Ukraine's accession to NATO is unrealistic and advised Kyiv to abandon attempts to regain territories lost since 2014 and prepare for peaceful resolution with the help of peacekeeping forces.
It is expected that the war in Europe and defense spending by NATO member countries will be the main topics at the Munich Security Conference. Vance, like Trump, expresses criticism towards the level of defense spending among U.S. allies, considering it insufficient.
During his visit to Germany, Vance visited the memorial of the Dachau concentration camp, which was opened in 1933 and where over 40,000 people died. The camp was liberated by American soldiers on April 29, 1945.
