George Simeon Acknowledged Defeat in Romanian Elections
The leader of the nationalist AUR party, George Simeon, officially acknowledged his defeat in the second round of the presidential elections in Romania, which concluded on Sunday, May 18. This was reported by Romania Journal.
In a widely circulated video address, the politician congratulated his opponent, Nicusor Dan, on his victory:
'I would like to congratulate my opponent Nicusor Dan. He won the elections. This was the will of the Romanian people.'Simeon also expressed gratitude to over five million citizens for their support and assured that 'he is proud of his supporters and will not disappoint them.'
According to official data from the Central Electoral Commission, Nicusor Dan received 53.60% of the votes, while his opponent garnered 46.40%. Interestingly, the voting results in the country showed a larger advantage for Dan, whereas Simeon won among the Romanian diaspora.
It is worth noting that earlier the leader of the far-right AUR disagreed with the preliminary election results, but now he has officially acknowledged the victory of his opponent.
